Each month brings new suppliers, new platforms and new promises: \u201eartificial intelligence will analyze the contract in 30 seconds\u201d, \u201eAI searches case law for you\u201d, \u201eautomate 40% of the law firm's work\u201d. Some of these promises are real. Some of them are wrapped ChatGPT with the law firm's logo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem is that choosing the wrong AI provider in the legal industry isn't just a waste of money. This is a legal, reputational and operational risk. A lawyer who signs an AI-generated paragraph under a letter citing a non-existent judgment has a problem. A client whose data is processed by an unconfigured tool without DPA, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This article shows how to choose an AI supplier for a law firm that actually understands the specifics of law, offers the right technical architecture and does not expose you to the risks that AI was supposed to eliminate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is AI for the legal industry a separate category?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A law firm is not a standard B2B company that needs invoicing automation. Legal work has three features that make general AI tools fail:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Precision is a sine qua non.<\/strong> In marketing, AI can \u201ehallucinate\u201d and write an incorrect claim, which you edit before publication. In law, AI that quotes a non-existent judgment or incorrectly interprets a provision leads to real harm to the client and the lawyer's professional liability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Data is sensitive by definition.<\/strong> Every case, client, contract and correspondence is subject to attorney-client privilege. Processing them through a tool without clear security guarantees, data localization and a DPA is a breach of professional obligations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Domain knowledge is Polish law, not English law.<\/strong> Most AI models available on the market were trained on English-language legal data. Polish law, the jurisprudence of the Supreme Court and the specificity of the national legal system are separate knowledge that cannot be replaced by a model trained on case law from England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does an AI provider for a law firm have to offer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before we move on to specific solutions, it is worth defining the minimum requirements. Without citations, it is difficult to verify accuracy and there is legal risk.<\/div><span class=\"lp-crit__tag lp-crit__tag--must\">ABSOLUTE REQUIREMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">RAG: why is this the only right architecture for law?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RAG, i.e. Retrieval-Augmented Generation, is an architecture in which the AI \u200b\u200blanguage model does not respond solely from the knowledge \u201euploaded\u201d during training, but in real time it reaches documents from the knowledge base, quotes them and formulates an answer based on them. For the law, this means a specific difference:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Classic GPT model asked about art. 415 of the Civil Code will give you something that sounds like Art. 415 of the Civil Code, but it may be out of date, badly paraphrased or simply made up. The RAG model retrieves the current text of the recipe from the database, quotes it verbatim and indicates the source. A lawyer can verify your answer in 10 seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a rule is changed, the classic model \u201edoes not know\u201d about the change until the next retraining, which may take place in months. The RAG model with an updated database knows about the change within days of its entry into force.
