The market for AI tools for lawyers is growing at a rate of several dozen percent per year. Each month brings new suppliers, new platforms and new promises: „artificial intelligence will analyze the contract in 30 seconds”, „AI searches case law for you”, „automate 40% of the law firm's work”. Some of these promises are real. Some of them are wrapped ChatGPT with the law firm's logo.
The problem is that choosing the wrong AI provider in the legal industry isn't just a waste of money. This is a legal, reputational and operational risk. A lawyer who signs an AI-generated paragraph under a letter citing a non-existent judgment has a problem. A client whose data is processed by an unconfigured tool without DPA, too.
This article shows how to choose an AI supplier for a law firm that actually understands the specifics of law, offers the right technical architecture and does not expose you to the risks that AI was supposed to eliminate.
Why is AI for the legal industry a separate category?
A law firm is not a standard B2B company that needs invoicing automation. Legal work has three features that make general AI tools fail:
Precision is a sine qua non. In marketing, AI can „hallucinate” and write an incorrect claim, which you edit before publication. In law, AI that quotes a non-existent judgment or incorrectly interprets a provision leads to real harm to the client and the lawyer's professional liability.
Data is sensitive by definition. Every case, client, contract and correspondence is subject to attorney-client privilege. Processing them through a tool without clear security guarantees, data localization and a DPA is a breach of professional obligations.
Domain knowledge is Polish law, not English law. Most AI models available on the market were trained on English-language legal data. Polish law, the jurisprudence of the Supreme Court and the specificity of the national legal system are separate knowledge that cannot be replaced by a model trained on case law from England.
What does an AI provider for a law firm have to offer?
Before we move on to specific solutions, it is worth defining the minimum requirements. The following six criteria are a filter that every supplier should be put through during the evaluation phase.
What does an AI provider for a law firm have to offer?
RAG: why is this the only right architecture for law?
RAG, i.e. Retrieval-Augmented Generation, is an architecture in which the AI language model does not respond solely from the knowledge „uploaded” during training, but in real time it reaches documents from the knowledge base, quotes them and formulates an answer based on them. For the law, this means a specific difference:
Classic GPT model asked about art. 415 of the Civil Code will give you something that sounds like Art. 415 of the Civil Code, but it may be out of date, badly paraphrased or simply made up. The RAG model retrieves the current text of the recipe from the database, quotes it verbatim and indicates the source. A lawyer can verify your answer in 10 seconds.
When a rule is changed, the classic model „does not know” about the change until the next retraining, which may take place in months. The RAG model with an updated database knows about the change within days of its entry into force. This is a key difference in a dynamically changing legislative environment.
Prawbot.pl: ready-made RAG system for law firms
One of the first Polish systems built in the RAG architecture for the legal industry is Prawbot.pl. It is a platform designed from scratch with law firms and corporate legal departments in mind, and not a general AI tool adapted for legal purposes.
Prawbot works on the Polish database of legal acts and case law, updated on an ongoing basis. Each answer includes a citation with the source: legal act, article, date. Law firms can also feed the system with their own documents, templates and procedures, thanks to which AI becomes an assistant that „knows” the specifics of a specific law firm, and not just general law.
For law firms that want to start working with AI quickly, without involving IT and without a multi-month implementation project, Prawbot.pl is a natural starting point. The subscription model means a low barrier to entry and the ability to assess value before you decide on deeper integration.
RAG made to order: when is an off-the-shelf tool not enough?
Ready-made platforms like Prawbot.pl have their natural limitations. They work great within the scope for which they are designed, but they will not replace a system built for a specific law firm, its internal processes and existing tools.
Custom-made RAG makes sense when a law firm needs: full integration with its own DMS or office system, AI feeding with an internal knowledge base (thousands of cases, templates, procedures), its own interface integrated with the lawyers' daily workflow, or when the scale of the law firm justifies a one-time investment instead of a long-term subscription.
W jsoncrew we build RAG systems to order for law firms and legal departments that have specific technical or process requirements. The project begins with an audit: what the law firm has (what documents, what systems), what it wants to achieve and what security requirements apply. On this basis, we design the architecture and estimate the cost before the decision to implement is made.
Two approaches: which one suits your law firm?
The list below will help you assess which solution is appropriate at a given stage. Many law firms start with a ready-made tool to understand how AI changes everyday work, and after 12-18 months they decide on their own, integrated system.

Ready-made specialized tool vs. a system built for specific needs
How to evaluate an AI provider before signing a contract?
Regardless of whether you choose a ready-made platform or a custom-made system, the following questions should be asked during the first meeting. The quality of the response will tell you more about the supplier than any presentation.

Summary: AI in a law firm is an investment in quality, not a replacement for a lawyer
The best law firms are no longer asking „should I implement AI”, but „how to implement AI responsibly?” The difference lies in selecting the right tool for the right problem: a ready-made RAG platform when the priority is the speed of start-up, or a custom-made system when the priority is full integration with the law firm's processes.
If you would like to discuss which approach suits your situation, or perhaps build your own RAG system integrated with your law firm's documents and processes, Let's talk.. We can also help you assess whether Prawbot.pl covers your needs, is it worth considering a dedicated solution?.
