Standard BLE said only one thing:
„The device is near or far.”
That is, RSSI (signal strength). The problem:
- walls attenuate the signal
- people are covering it up
- reflections off the metal strengthen it
The result? A location error of 5-15 meters.
Useless for industry, hospitals or warehouses.
What was needed was not „how strong the signal,” but:
„From which direction he comes / in which direction he leaves.”
What is Angle of Departure (AoD)?

AoD =.. The angle at which the signal leaves the transmitter.
In Bluetooth Direction Finding systems, we have two approaches:
| Technology | Who counts the direction? | Where are the antennas? |
|---|---|---|
| AoA (Angle of Arrival).. | receiver | On the infrastructure side |
| AoD (Angle of Departure).. | receiver | on the transmitter side |
In AoD:
- The transmitter (e.g., beacon, tag, device) has a array of antennas
- sends a signal in a controlled phase sequence
- receiver analyzes phase differences
- calculates the angle at which the signal „went out”
How does it work technically?

4
Bottom line:
The transmitter has multiple antennas
Sends the signal from each antenna in a specific order
Differences in the phase of radio waves arise
The receiver measures these differences
From the phase differences, the following is calculated Angle (azimuth + often elevation)
This is no longer „signal power.”.
It's radio wave geometry.
After the merger:
- angle
- powers
- multiple pick-up points
can be obtained location with an accuracy of 10-50 cm.
What does Bluetooth 6.1 change?
Bluetooth 6.x is not „another version for audio.”.
It's an evolution under:
- location
- IoT
- low energy consumption
- signal stability
In terms of location, the development is going:
- better support for Direction Finding
- more stable signal frames
- work more efficiently with multiple devices
- more accurate time synchronization
Which is to say: Bluetooth is starting to be location platform, not just communication.
Where does this make real business sense?
This is not a gadget. This is infrastructure.
📦 Logistics and warehouses
- location of forklifts
- tracking of pallets and containers
- goods movement analysis
- route optimization
Instead of:
„Where is the palette?”
You have:
„It is 2.3 meters from gate 7, zone B.”
Hospitals
- location of medical equipment
- monitoring of beds and carts
- Finding equipment quickly in emergencies
Equipment search time = real operating cost.
Smart buildings and offices
- analysis of the flow of people
- space management
- security
- location of workers in danger zones
Industry and manufacturing
- tracking of semi-finished products
- synchronization with MES
- downtime analysis
- tool location
Bluetooth with AoD becomes a „GPS inside the hall.”.
Why is this more important than it seems?
Because localization is the missing layer of data.
CompaNos know:
- what they produce
- how much they sell
- what stocks they have
But they don't know:
Where exactly things are in real time.
Bluetooth Direction Finding is:
spatial data
decision carmation
less manual reporting
less waste and downtime
The biggest mental change
Bluetooth is no longer a „consumer technology.”.
It becomes:
sensory layer for the physical world,
connecting the space with IT systems.
Angle of Departure is one of the cornerstones of this change, because it allows us not only to “stay connected,” but know where something is with operational precision.
And that, in logsstics, medicine and industry, is worth more than faster-playing music on headphones.
